How well are you building bone?
Bone is living tissue and is very active. It is constantly rebuilding and remodeling itself. The bone matrix is made up of collagen that contains unique cross linked proteins that provide stability. Resorption refers to the breakdown of this protein structure.
Osteoporosis affects almost 10 million Americans and an additional 34 million Americans are estimated to have osteopenia. 50% of women over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime.
Currently, the diagnosis of osteoporosis relies on evaluating the bone mineral density (BMD) and conventional treatments focus on increasing BMD. However, it is important to understand that BMD is just one component of the fracture risk. Genetics, physical activity level, smoking and alcohol use, prolonged use of steroids, use of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors), and weight are some of the other factors that are taken into account when assessing fracture risk.
The lab test used in this program helps to analyze biochemical markers which reflect current bone remodeling activity. It is an effective tool to help monitor bone resorption rates and the effectiveness of therapies.
The Healthy Bones Program includes:
- Lab test to assess how well your body is building bone
- Review of the test findings
- Customized plan to keep your bones healthy
